The Wilzenberg nature reserve with a size of 73.6 hectares is located north of Grafschaft in the city of Schmallenberg . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan . It is only 100 m from the Grafschaft village.
Area description
The NSG is a red beech forest with rocks and springs on the Wilzenberg . The Wilzenberg tower , a small pilgrimage chapel from 1633 and a 28 m high summit cross are located on the Wilzenberg . In addition, there are ring walls of a hill fort , which has been designated as a ground monument , on the mountain. The Brauers-Deyk (brother pond) is located on the western slope . Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.
Protection purpose
The NSG is supposed to protect the forest area with its species inventory.
As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
