history

After 1880 the idea to build the tower arose. With the great commitment of the Oberkirchen manufacturer Otto Schütte , a plan developed out of this. In 1883 a tower committee was founded. It was planned to build a 15 m high observation tower made of iron. Otto Schütte agreed to provide the necessary charcoal from his factory . The donations were poor, so the Sauerland Mountain Association donated part of the amount. Due to financial difficulties, the tower was initially only built up to a height of 10 m in 1889.

When it was to be renovated in 1989 as part of its centenary, the tower was raised to its current height of 17 m. The new tower was officially inaugurated on May 12, 1990. The steel construction of the Wilzenberg tower has a hexagonal floor plan and is one of the oldest iron observation towers. A spiral staircase leads to two platforms at 8.9 m and 15.9 m tower height, of which the upper one offers an almost complete all-round view over the surrounding tree tops.
