The Opspring nature reserve with a size of 11.7 hectares is located southeast of Grafschaft in the urban area of Schmallenberg . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan .
Area description
The NSG consists of three neighboring but not contiguous areas. These include the headwaters of the Grafschaft stream and two headwaters of tributaries of the Grafschaft (Bauke and NN) in wooded valley valleys. The north-facing slopes of the valley are overgrown with red beech and some red spruce . In areas of low rocks, the forest is shaped like a shadowy slope with sycamore maple . Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.
Protection purpose
The NSG is intended to protect the forest areas with species inventory.
As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
