The nature reserve on the summer side with a size of 4.6 hectares is located southwest of Westfeld in the urban area of Schmallenberg . The area was last designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan . Previously, it had already been designated as a nature reserve in 1935 and 1953 by ordinance of the Arnsberg district government.

Area description

The NSG consists of two parts, with the northern part being divided into two parts by a gravel driveway. The partial areas are located on two flattened peaks of the Graftenberg . Small rock ribs can be found in the areas. In the NSG you can find dwarf shrub heaths , silicate grasslands and grass lawns . There are also individual trees, bushes and junipers on the heather. The juniper grows singly and in groups on the heather. The heather is in a vital state on the southern part of the area and there are no eutrophication indicators here .

The nature reserve is owned by the Sauerland Mountain Association (SGV).

Protection purpose

The protection serves to preserve these montane high heaths , the biotope islands valuable in terms of vegetation within the largely forested Rothaargebirge . Both sub-areas are important for species protection (also for animal and plant species on the Red List ) and are considered particularly worthy of protection habitats according to Section 62 of the State Nature Conservation Act of North Rhine-Westphalia. The heather is also to be preserved as a relic of the former forest pasture in the Sauerland , worthy of cultural history .

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

Protective measures

The southern part of the NSG is grazed with goats. In 2013 and 2014, the Biological Station Hochsauerlandkreis mowed and removed large areas of natural spruce regeneration and gorse in the southern part of the area with a brush cutter.
