The nature reserve forest reserve Schanze (northern sub-area) with a size of 2101 ha is located south of Grafschaft in the urban area of Schmallenberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis . The southern border of the protected area is also the border with the Siegen-Wittgenstein district . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan . It consists of three sub-areas and is located entirely in the much larger FFH area Schanze (DE-4816-302), which makes it part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . The FFH area continues in the neighboring district of Siegen-Wittgenstein in the area of Bad Berleburg and Erndtebrück . The addition of the northern sub-area in the name of the nature reserve refers to this FFH area, the southern part of which is taken up by the nature reserves Rothaarkamm on Grenzweg (SI-091 in Bad Berleburg) and Rothaarkamm on Grenzweg (SI-122 in Erndtebrück).

Wood sorrel on a stump in the NSG
Wild garlic blossom

The NSG is mostly red beech forests . In the area also come ravine forest and Shatt Hangenwald ago. Black alder forests exist in alluvial areas. In addition, there are small areas of grassland in the valleys. In the NSG there are larger areas with red spruce forests , which were not included in the protected area and are located like islands in the beech forest. Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forests with their species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

Bison in the NSG

Since 2013 bisons from the wild herd of the bison wilderness can also be found in the NSG .
