The Upper Lennetal nature reserve with a size of 25.6 hectares is located south and east of Westfeld in the urban area of Schmallenberg in the Lennetal . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan . The NSG consists of two areas. The two sub-areas are separated from each other by the Upper Lennetal nature reserve in the Winterberg urban area . The NSG connects directly to the Kahler Asten nature reserve in the urban area of Winterberg, where the Lenne rises.
Area description
It is a low mountain range with a brook and surrounding grassland.
Protection purpose
The NSG is intended to protect the near-natural low mountain range Lenne in this area.
As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
Protective measures
According to the landscape plan, the red spruce stands in the floodplain of the western part of the area should be cleared and turned back into grassland.
