The nature reserve Altholzinsel in the Fredeburg Forest with a size of 3 hectares is located south of Rimberg in the urban area of Schmallenberg . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan .

Area description

The NSG is a red beech forest at an altitude of over 720 m. The old beeches have a chest height diameter of 0.70 to 0.80 m. There is a lot of standing and lying dead wood in the existing structure . Sometimes there are bear moss carpets on the floor . Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forest area with its species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
