The nature reserve Schluchtwald bei Hundesossen with a size of 29.7 ha is located south of Hundesossen in the urban area of Schmallenberg . The southern border of the protected area is almost on the border with the Siegen-Wittgenstein district . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan . The nature reserve is completely located in the somewhat larger FFH area Schluchtwald near Saalhausen (DE-4815-301) with approx. 35.2 hectares , which makes it part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

Area description

The NSG consists mainly of structurally rich red beech and ravine forest areas . Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG. In the herb layer, the lunar viola occurs in part .

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forests with their species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
