The nature reserve Felsbastion Hollenhaus with a size of 3.4 hectares is located between Osterwald and Bödefeld in the urban area of Schmallenberg . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan .

Area description

The NSG is a ravine forest on the eastern slope of the Nonnenstein . The area is planted with beech and maple. At the edge the ravine forest merges into a pure beech forest. The Hollenhaus rock has a height of up to 30 m. Climbing is prohibited on the rock, as there is a particularly rich variety of lichen and moss vegetation on the rock. Rock fern vegetation grows on some rocky outcrops. Parts of today's NSG were used as goat huts by the village of Bödefeld until the 1950s. Until the 1950s, the peregrine falcon brood on the Hollenhaus rock, which at that time was still free. Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forest area with rocks and its species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
