The nature reserve Hunau-Langer back-Heidberg with a size of 606.5 hectares is located on the eastern outskirts of Schmallenberg . The area consists of two sub-areas and was last designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Schmallenberg Southeast landscape plan . The two former nature reserves Hunau (HSK-015) and Hunau (HSK-147) were merged and expanded. As early as 1953, two moor areas were established in today's area as NSG Nasse Wiese and NSG Hochmoor Rauhes Bruch .

Large areas of the nature reserve are located in the much larger FFH area of Hunau, Oberes Negertal, Renautal and Steinberg (DE-4717-301), which makes them part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . This FFH area continues in the adjacent city area of Winterberg . The Bödefeld telecommunications tower is directly adjacent to the west of the NSG .

Area description

Rauhes Bruch moorland in the NSG (2010)

The NSG consists mainly of red beech and red spruce forests. Gorge and Schatthangwald also occur in some areas . Black alder forests exist in alluvial areas. In addition, there are small areas of grassland in the valleys.

On the Hunau there are the two sloping moors, Nasse Wiese and Rauhes Bruch . In addition, the 11.5 hectare Hunau natural forest cell (NWZ 41), designated in 1977, is located within the nature reserve.

Species in the nature reserve

In the bog area, species such as cotton grass , fever clover or the small-fruited cranberries are found. In the Hochsauerlandkreis, the cranberries are only found in this NSG. In the peripheral areas, the two moors of the Hunau merge into bristle grass lawns and heather rich in blueberries. The great moss damsel also occurs in the bog area.

There are valuable near-natural wild beech forests with the black woodpecker . Also wildcat and black storks are found in the NSG. In the spring, the nail spot , a diurnal moth, occurs in the beech forests.

The meadow eyebright blooms on the Hunau ski slope . There are ponds and ponds in several places in the NSG. Amphibians such as common toads and common frogs , mountain newts , thread newts and fire salamanders live here .

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forests with their species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
