Life

origin

Georg Wilhelm came from the Westphalian noble family von dem Bussche . His father, a nephew of Lebrecht von dem Bussche , was Baron Hilmar Albrecht von dem Bussche (* December 8, 1689, † August 3, 1726), Prussian secret judiciary and cathedral kuster in Minden. His mother, Anna Dorothea, was born from Vincke (1691–1763).

Military career

After the early death of his father, he came to Hanover as a page to King George II and entered the military there in 1743. Gradually he climbed the ranks, was appointed major in 1759 , lieutenant colonel in 1762, colonel in 1776, major general in 1778 , infantry inspector in 1783, lieutenant general in 1788 and infantry general in 1793. From his entry into the military, he took part in all campaigns and the more important battles of the Hanoverian army of that time. First he fought in the Austrian War of Succession and then in the Seven Years' War . He distinguished himself especially in 1759 in the battle of Minden and in 1762 in the battle of Lutterberg . In 1775, when the outbreak of the American War of Independence was looming, he was given command of one of the Hanoverian battalions destined for Gibraltar , but had to surrender it in order to be promoted to colonel. At that time August de la Motte became the company's commander .

The outbreak of war against France in 1792 was the next possibility for him. In 1793 he was given command of the Hanoverian imperial contingent ordered to Kassel . When, soon afterwards, following France's declaration of war against Holland and England on February 1, 1793, the Hanoverian army was united with the English under the Duke of York , he was given the command of the 1st division. His most important act occurred in this campaign; the storming of Rexponde on September 6, 1793 to free the wounded Field Marshal Wilhelm von Freytag, who was taken prisoner by the French . His behavior was equally excellent in the battles at Courtrai on April 26, at Coighem on May 10, in the Battle of Tourcoing on May 17 and 18 and in the battle at Pont à Clün ( Battle of Torunai ) on May 22. May 1794. In a minor battle during the defense of the Waallinie on December 11, 1794, a cannonball tore his right hand away; his death followed soon after. December 14th. he was buried in Arnhem Cathedral.
