Songs of Green Pheasant is the solo project of the British teacher and musician Duncan Sumpner (born 1975 ) from Oughtibridge near Sheffield .

history

In 2002 Duncan Sumpner sent the FatCat Records label , on which Sigur Rós was also under contract at the time, a demo with songs that he had recorded in his kitchen with a simple four-track device . FatCat was enthusiastic about the music, but could not inform Sumpner about it, because he had forgotten to give a return address. The label began a two-year detective work to get in touch with Sumpner. When FatCat offered him a record deal, Sumpner was surprised because he had recorded the songs for fun and forgot about it when there was no response from FatCat. At first he suggested that the songs be professionally recorded again in a studio, but FatCat insisted on releasing the demos in their raw quality, as this would be the allure of the music. The recordings were only slightly cracked and released in 2005 as the self-titled debut album by Songs of Green Pheasant. Sumpner recorded the EP Aerial Days (2006) again in his kitchen, but this time with an eight-track device.

When recording Gyllyng Street (2007), Sumpner relied more than before on external musicians.

music

The keynote of Songs of Green Pheasant is melancholy, the music consists mainly of acoustic guitars and Sumpner's voice, which is often underlaid with reverb . Occasionally Sumpner uses a drum machine and subtle electronic effects. The band's sound has often been compared to the darker works of Simon and Garfunkel or Talk Talk and Mark Hollis, but also to Butterfly Child, Flying Saucer Attack, Jeweled Antler Collective, Richard Young or Galaxie 500 . A proximity to Postrock (Explosions in the Sky) is also audible.
