Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos , even Sonic Chaos , in Japan as Sonic & Tails ( Japanese ソニック&テイルス , Hepburn : Sonikku ando Teirusu ), is a 2D platformers Run - video game , that of Aspect Co. Ltd. and was released by Sega for the Sega Master System in Europe only on October 25, 1993. For the Sega Game Gear , the game was released in Japan on November 19, 1993, and in the USA and Europe on November 23, 1993, although this version has a much smaller game section due to the small display. As with the sequel, the player can choose between Sonic and Tails at the beginning of the game , hence the Japanese title Sonic & Tails .

It is the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) and the predecessor of Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble (1994).

action

Dr. Robotnik steals a Chaos Emerald from South Island, causing earthquakes and turmoil on the island. Sonic and Tails learn from Flicky the Bluebird that the Chaos Emeralds came from the island's north cave. Then you see Dr. Robotnik fly away with the red Chaos Emerald. He plans to use it to build nuclear weapons and laser cannons. This creates an imbalance in the Chaos Emeralds and causes the remaining ones to disappear into a parallel universe. To prevent South Island from collapsing in the ocean at some point, Sonic and Tails set out on their way to reclaim the Chaos Emeralds and rebalance the universe by bringing them back from the parallel world.

Gameplay

In Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos , the player takes control of the blue hedgehog Sonic or, for the first time on the 8-bit systems, Tails in a side-scrolling 2D platformer. In addition to the control pad for movement, only one action button is required to jump. In jumping or rolling form, called Spin Attack, Sonic and Tails can defeat opponents or open item boxes in the form of monitors. If you let Sonic or Tails duck down with the directional pad and then press and release the jump button, the character with the Spin Dash can quickly dash forward from a standing position with the Spin Attack. If you hold up the directional pad while standing and press the jump button , Sonic executes the new Strike Dash technique or lets Tails fly. When touched, the golden rings can be collected; If the pawn takes damage, it loses the rings. If the character takes damage without having rings or falls into a deadly abyss, he loses an extra life, of which you have three at the start of the game. If you collect 100 rings, you get another extra life. In the monitors there can be an extra life, ten rings, temporary increased speed, temporary invulnerability or the new rocket shoes (only for Sonic). In this game, the goal can also contain 10 rings, an extra life or a continue. Most opponents can be defeated with the Spin Attack, which earns the player points and frees the trapped animals.

The game consists of six zones ( Turquoise Hill Zone , Gigalopolis Zone , Sleeping Egg Zone , Mecha Green Hill Zone , Aqua Planet Zone and Electric Egg Zone ) with three acts each, which can be defined as levels . Each zone has its own theme, appearance and variety of opponents. At the end of the third act there is also a fight against one of Dr. Robotniks robots or Dr. Robotnik himself. If the character reaches the end of a first or second act in a zone with at least 100 rings, it can go to one of the five special stages, where one of the six Chaos Emeralds in the game can be found. The sixth Chaos Emerald is obtained for defeating Dr. Robotnik at the end of the last zone. For collecting all six Chaos Emeralds, Sonic also receives the happy ending, which Tails always achieves.

development

After the Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear versions of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 differed significantly despite the same name, the next 8-bit platform game was decided for your own, re-cut game. As the predecessor developed by Aspect Co. Ldt , according to the developers, they now had more experience with the optimal use of the hardware and could therefore make the game work faster and faster. In addition, the smaller screen section on the Game Gear no longer caused such a severe disadvantage or a higher level of difficulty as with the predecessor.
