Sophie - Bride Against Will was the fifth German telenovela .

It aired from November 8, 2005 to March 9, 2006 on the 1st , Tuesday through Friday at 6:50 p.m. The Austrian private broadcaster ATVplus also broadcast the series. In addition, the highlights of the week , a 25-minute summary, were shown on Sundays in some of the third programs ( MDR , NDR and WDR ) .

On December 9, 2005, it was announced that the series would not continue due to poor ratings and would end after 65 episodes.

    background

The telenovela was produced by Grundy UFA TV Produktions GmbH in the studios in Berlin-Adlershof, as well as Verliebt in Berlin ( Sat.1 ). A world of its own was created in just three months in two studios and a 1,400 square meter outdoor revolving hall specially built for the telenovela: a total of 2,600 square meters housed 24 different venues, including a complete historic market square and a ruined castle. In the area of furnishing alone, props were collected across Europe in order to recreate the furnishings of the bourgeois and aristocratic world of a past century. So one can speak of the most elaborate production of a German telenovela.

The shooting took place from September 12, 2005 to December 30, 2005.

The number of episodes in the series should range from 65 to 130 episodes, depending on its success. However, the market shares fell short of expectations and so it came to a happy end after 65 episodes.

    action

The telenovela is set in the second half of the 19th century.

The young noblewoman Sophie von Ahlen visits a civil wedding in the city inn without permission and falls head over heels in love with Max Grebe, the son of a seamstress. In order not to be recognized, however, she poses as a maid named Johanna. Only later do the two meet again and when Max takes a job as manager of the von Ahlens winery, he learns of Sophie's true origins. As he is disappointed by Sophie's lie, their love seems to have no future.

The industrialist Friedrich Hartenstein tried - with the help of his handyman Hans Stallkamp and the gambling addict and therefore financially dependent Baron Wolfgang von der Fohl - to rise into the aristocratic circles of the city by applying for membership in a feudal cigar club. Count Otto von Ahlen, Sophie's father, is the only one who votes against membership and thus prevents Hartenstein's acceptance into the club. In revenge, Hartenstein ruins the winery with a skillful move in order to then play himself as a savior. He confesses his (honest) love to Sophie and can marry into the family.

But his ex-lover, Baroness Valerie von Viethoff, knows the exact background and she manages to tell Sophie the whole truth right before her wedding night with Friedrich. She is outraged and tries to flee. The Count von Ahlen is also slowly becoming suspicious and begins to investigate. When he confronts Hartenstein, he sends Hans after him, who pushes him off a staircase so that the count breaks his neck. Sophie tries again to flee, but she has no chance, Friedrich finds her at Max's mother Lotte's in the tailor's shop, takes her back and locks her up in his city office. Max finds out about this and threatens Friedrich with a rifle. At that moment he learns that Friedrich is his birth father, whom he has never known. He lowers the rifle; a shot is fired.

Valerie shot Friedrich. His henchman Hans avenge this murder directly by suffocating Valerie. Max and Sophie are saved and Sophie's aunt Magda no longer has anything against a wedding. Max's friend Benedikt, who meanwhile went to war for Max, also returns and marries Sophie's chambermaid Rike.

    criticism

“[...] Because even if the ARD claims that their new series“ Sophie - Bride against Will ”takes place in the late 19th century, Sophie actually lives in a world that is much more familiar to us: in this fictional formerly the Commercial television fiction in which there are still real markets, rustic living rooms and honest handicraft, in which the clothes are silky, the faces flawless and the feelings pure. And despite all the alleged attention to historical detail, the stately tables in Gutshof von Ahlen are actually missing the plate with the Rocher balls to make the scene really authentic. [...] And while everyone around her moves stiff and strange in this artificial world, which looks like a television studio every single second, with their big sideburns and flowing clothes, Catterfeld looks as if this is their natural habitat. (However, it is difficult to say whether this is the only thing that makes this previous evening fairy tale bearable or completely unbearable.) "
