Sophie Xeon , known as SOPHIE (born on 17th September 1986 as Samuel Long in Glasgow , Scotland ; died on the thirtieth January 2021 in Athens , Greece ), was a British music producer , singer and DJ .

Life

Sophie's father took her to raves when she was young and introduced her to electronic music. Her first appearance as a DJ was at her half-sister's wedding, after which other people in her area booked her for weddings.

She released her first songs on SoundCloud , and in October 2013 she released her first single, Nothing More to Say, on the Huntleys + Palmers label . The follow-up single Bipp / Elle landed at number 17 on Pitchfork Media's year-end charts . In 2014 she produced the music project QT and their single Hey QT together with AG Cook from the PC Music label . This was followed by collaboration with other musicians from PC Music, such as GFOTY .

The musical breakthrough came from 2015 when she worked with well-known pop stars. Under the maiden name Samuel Long she was one of the producers of the single Bitch I'm Madonna by Madonna and produced almost the entire EP Vroom Vroom as well as other singles by Charli XCX . Her debut album Product was also released in 2015 .

In October 2017 she released her first solo material with the single It's Okay to Cry . In the accompanying music video she first appeared as a person in her work and used her own voice for a song. Shortly thereafter, she publicly confessed to being a trans woman . Her second album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Dance / Electronic Album in 2019 .

Sophie died on January 30, 2021 after a climbing accident in Athens .

Sophie defined herself as non-binary and had lived with Tzef Montana, also non-binary, in Athens since 2019. They later separated.
