The Southern Ingram family is not exactly a model family. Matriarch Peggy Ingram ( Rue McClanahan ) takes on the well-known bar singer Bitsy Mae Harling ( Olivia Newton-John ) after Bitsy Mae was released from prison and has an affair with the husband of her sister's neighbor, Sissy ( Beth Grant ). Peggy's older daughter LaVonda ( Ann Walker ) lives with her chain-smoking aunt Sissy, while Peggy's younger daughter Latrelle ( Bonnie Bedelia ) tries to maintain the image of a perfectionist.

Peggy's third child, Earl "Brother Boy" Ingram ( Leslie Jordan ), was sent to the madhouse by his parents for transvestism - he has been there for 23 years. He is a big fan of the country singer Tammy Wynette , who appears to him as a ghost and encourages her to continue her life's work. Brother Boy tries to escape the madhouse by referring to the questionable therapy of the crazy Dr. Eve ( Rosemary Alexander ) lets in, who thinks she can cure his homosexuality .

LaVonda's best friend Noleta ( Caroline Rhea ) lives with her husband GW ( David Steen ), a Vietnam veteran with two prosthetic pegs , in a trailer in Sissy Ingram's garden. Noltea refuses to sleep with GW if he does not want to keep his prostheses on, so he regularly takes refuge in the local bar "Bubbas" and seeks the community of visitors there, the brothers Wardell ( Newell Alexander ) and Odell ( David Cowgill ), Bitsy Mae and the always drunk Juanita ( Sarah Hunley ), who has been trying for years to uncover a competition scandal that only exists in her alcoholic imagination.

Latrelle's son Ty ( Jason Dottley ) lives as an actor in Los Angeles and fights with some therapists to come to terms with his homosexuality. In addition, he has to have the relationship with his first boyfriend ( Ted Detwiler ), a stalker who was once his girlfriend ( Sharron Alexis ), an angry one-night stand ( Emerson Collins ) and his coming out to his best straight friend ( Robert Lewis Stephenson ) and his family in Texas.
