SoulBreed is a German rock band from Recklinghausen .

The group is assigned to alternative rock , combining elements from classic rock , hard rock , grunge and metal with melodic, polyphonic singing. The band now calls this mix of styles Pure Rock .

history

founding

SoulBreed was originally founded in 1999 under the name El Mariachi . The band changed the name a short time later when they became aware of a single release under this artist name. The former band name is the title of the first demo CD, which also contains a song of the same name. With the made-up word, which would translate into German as soul breeding , the musicians describe their group abstractly as the cradle for "songs with soul". The band name should reflect the collective creation process of their music.

The music

SoulBreed emerged from a session project by actors from the Recklinghausen music scene who were active there in bands of various styles such as hard rock , hardcore and grunge . These influences in connection with their common musical roots in classic rock and heavy metal combine the band members to a music style that they call pure rock music . With the release of the first demo El Mariachi in 2000 at the latest, the former session project quickly became the main band of the four musicians. The only change of line-up in the band's history followed shortly afterwards in 2001 and concerns the position of the second guitar, which Patrick Brühl takes over from then on. The first release with the new line-up is the CD fifty / fifty , which was released in 2002 by the band's own distribution. The EP the flame follows in 2004 and shows a musical development of the band that is moving away from the grunge borrowings of the early days.

Since 2006, SoulBreed can be seen live in addition to their amplified and so-called unplugged programs, in which they play acoustic versions of their repertoire as well as specially composed pieces with acoustic instruments. With acoustic one and acoustic two , SoulBreed even released pure acoustic CDs in 2007–2009.

At the end of 2010, SoulBreed retired to the recording studio to record the album X , the tenth year since the band was founded . X was published on April 1, 2011 and received consistently positive reviews in the trade press.

As an important stylistic device, SoulBreed use melodic, polyphonic (mostly three-part) vocal lines in contrast to the predominantly hard instrumental arrangements. One of the two lead singers Marc van de Weyer and Raphael Weber alternately takes over the main voice, the remaining lead singer forms the choir together with drummer Paddy van de Weyer.

Side projects

In addition to SoulBreed, Raphael Weber was also active as a guitarist in the dark rock band Swans of Avon .
