panorama

The first inhabitants in the area of today's city were Mi'kmaq Indians . Acadian immigrants settled the area in 1720 . When the region was ravaged by a mouse plague around 1750 , the place was called Souris based on the French word souris for "mouse". The city was officially founded on November 14, 1910. Due to its location on Northumberlandstrasse, the town has been a center for shipbuilding from the very beginning to the present day . In addition, agriculture and fishing, especially lobster catch and tourism, developed into new branches of the economy. The place has a combined fishing and ferry port .
