The South Fork Trinity River is a left tributary of the Trinity River in the north of the US state of California . The 148 km long river drains an area of 2413 km².
The South Fork Trinity River has its source in the North Yolla Bolly Mountains in Trinity County . It flows in a north-northwest direction through the California Coast Mountains . At Hyampom , Hayfork Creek , the largest tributary of the South Fork Trinity River, flows into the river from the right. At Salyer , the South Fork Trinity River meets the Trinity River. For the last 19 kilometers of the river, the river forms the border between Trinity and Humboldt Counties .
The course of the river is protected as a National Wild and Scenic River below the State Route 36 bridge . South Fork Trinity River and Hayfork Creek are free of dams.
The timber industry dominates in the predominantly wooded catchment area. Soil erosion leads to a high sediment load in the river. Fish stocks, especially migratory fish such as salmon and other salmonids , decreased sharply in the course of the 20th century due to overfishing and deterioration in water conditions.
