The 1973/74 season was the first regular season of the newly formed Southern Hockey League . During the regular season, the six teams were supposed to play 72 games each, but the schedule had to be revised due to the early, financially-conditioned departure of the Suncoast Suns . In the play-offs, the Roanoke Valley Rebels prevailed and won the first SHL championship title in their club's history.
