The Southern Copper Corporation is an American mining company owned by Grupo México . The company mainly mines copper as well as molybdenum , zinc and silver as by-products . In the 2015 financial year, 743,000 t of copper were mined.

history

In 1952 the Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) was founded, in which ASARCO (51.5%), Cerro de Pasco Corporation (22.5%), Phelps Dodge (16%) and Newmont Mining (10%) took part . Cerro de Pasco brought in the claim Cuajone. In 1959, the Toquepala opencast mine and the smelter in Ilo went into operation. From 1969 to 1976 the Toquepala opencast mine was opened. The Velasco Alvarado government also built its own copper refinery in Ilo, which was supplied with blister copper by SPCC.

In 2004 Grupo México acquired the 54.2% of the shares in Southern Peru Copper Corporation. In October 2005 the name was changed to Southern Copper Corporation.

Mines

The Southern Copper Corporation operates the Cuajone and Toquepala opencast mines in Peru (on the Ilo – Toquepala – Cuajone rail line ) and Cananea and La Caridad in Mexico .

In southern Peru, 9 km north of the village of Cocachacra in the Arequipa region , the Southern Copper Corporation planned a large mine, called Tía María , to extract copper ore. After ongoing protests against the project, the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mining suspended its permission to build Tía María on August 9, 2019 .
