The Soviet war cemetery Simmerath - Rurberg is a war grave cemetery in Simmerath , above Rurberg , on the border with Kesternich . There, 2,322 Soviet citizens - men, women and children - are mostly buried in communal graves. They were prisoners of war or forced laborers who died as a result of forced labor and the events of war ( extermination through work ).

On June 2, 1961, the place of honor was inaugurated by the Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Josef Hermann Dufhues ; the Munich Archbishop Alexander , of the Russian Orthodox Church in Germany, and the Hamburg Bishop Philoteus blessed the burial site on July 16, 1961.

Most of the dead were not previously known by name. The American Army had given the data to the Soviet Union. Russia didn't release the names until 2016. As a memorial, 10 granite steles with the engraved names were set up.

The newly created granite steles with the names were inaugurated on June 19, 2016. Numerous residents of the surrounding towns, representatives of the churches, representatives of the Russian embassy and the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia were present.

The entrance building received an architecture award from the Aachen district group of the BDA in 1993.
