Social Democratic Party (Republic of Moldova)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Social Democratic Party ( Romanian Partidul Social Democrat , PSD) is a social democratic Moldovan political party .

history

The Social Democratic Party was founded in the Moldovan SSR on May 13, 1990 as Partidul Social Democrat din Moldova (Social Democratic Party of Moldova). In national elections it has been unsuccessful to this day, mainly due to the competition with other center-left parties, and has not yet been able to achieve the 6% share of the vote ( threshold clause ) required to enter parliament . However, it is represented in regional and local parliaments.

In December 2007, the PSD merged with the Partidul Democrației Sociale (Party of Social Democracy) of former Prime Minister Dumitru Braghiș . During this time, numerous former members of the Uniunea Centristă din Moldova (UCM; Center Union of Moldova) joined the Social Democrats. After his party's accession to the PSD, the former PDS chairman Braghiș became the new leader of the Social Democrats. The previous chairman Eduard Musuc became the new general secretary.

At the local level, the PSD worked in part with the ruling communists and the Christian Democrats in the years that followed. Some disappointed members then switched to the anti-communist Liberal Democrats . In 2010 it made headlines because it lost 11,000 members to the Democratic Party, which is also represented in parliament.

Alignment

The party sees itself as a representative of social democracy in Moldova and is in competition with the larger center-left parties, the pro-Western Democratic Party and the pro-Russian Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova . The party advocates the accession of Moldova to the customs union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan and wanted to initiate a referendum on this. The reason given is that the market there is more open to Moldovan products than the EU internal market.
