Christian Democratic People's Party (Republic of Moldova)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Christian Democratic People's Party ( Romanian Partidul Popular Creștin Democrat , PPCD) is a conservative Moldovan political party .

history

The PPCD emerged from the Moldovan citizens' movement in the Soviet Union , which, under the influence of Gorbachev's politics ( glasnost and perestroika ), campaigned for reforms in the Moldovan SSR and the interests of the ethnic Romanian population group from 1988 onwards. Later she also advocated unification of Moldova with Romania .

In the first few months the organization called itself Mişcarea Democratică din Moldova (Democratic Movement of Moldova), from 1989 Frontul Popular din Moldova (Popular Front of Moldova), from 1992 Frontul Popular Creştin Democrat (Christian Democratic Popular Front). In 1999, it was finally renamed Partidul Popular Creştin Democrat . From 2005 to 2013 the PPCD had observer status with the European People's Party . She is now a member of the European Christian Political Movement .

After the parliamentary elections in 2005, she helped President Vladimir Voronin of the Communist Party , who lacked the necessary number of votes in parliament, to be re-elected as head of state. The PPCD was henceforth an unofficial coalition partner of the communists. As a result, it lost numerous members and also elected officials to other opposition parties. In the parliamentary elections in April 2009 she missed the 6% hurdle and has not been represented in parliament since then.

The chairman of the PPCD was the journalist Iurie Roşca from 1994-2011 , and since then the lawyer Victor Ciobanu .
