Spankeren is the name of a Dutch family, which has also been German since the 19th century, which takes its name from the town of Spankeren (now part of Rheden ) near Arnhem and whose line of roots begins with Bernt van Spankeren , mentioned in a document in 1637, Gildeknecht of the Schiffergilde in Arnhem .

Name change and nobility rise

On June 12, 1858 in Berlin by cabinet order the brothers Wilhelm (1797 to 1862), royal Prussian administrative director of the federal fortress Mainz , and Friedrich von Spankeren (1804-1886), royal-Prussian district president in Arnsberg , permission to name leaders of Spankeren granted , but without admission to the Prussian nobility .

The elevation to the hereditary Prussian nobility did not take place until September 12, 1896 in Berlin for the Prussian Lieutenant General Rudolf von Spankeren (1839–1920), eldest son of Wilhelm van Spankeren.
