The institutes that have now merged to form Sparkasse Kulmbach-Kronach were founded between 1835 and 1861; Between 1937 and 2005, the mergers took place to form what now comprises two districts.

In November 1835, Friedrich Carl Hermann, Graf and Herr von Giech founded a "Sparkassenanstalt" in the building of the Thurnau Domain Chancellery . The District Savings Bank Ludwigsstadt was launched in September 1843, the city of Kronach followed in May 1844 with the establishment of a "Sparkassen Anstalt". 15 years later, three more foundations followed at short intervals: "Bezirkssparkasse Kronach" (1859), Distriktssparkasse Stadtsteinach (November 1860) and Sparkassenstalt for the district court district of Kulmbach (May 1861).

The “Stadt- und Kreissparkasse Kulmbach” association was established in January 1937, and in April 1938 the Stadtsparkasse and the Kronach district savings bank merged to form the “Vereinigte Sparkassen Kronach” association. In January 1978, the Stadt- und Kreissparkasse Kulmbach and the Kreissparkasse Stadtsteinach merged to form the “Sparkasse Kulmbach”. Important construction projects were the inauguration and opening of the main office in Kronach (1957), the main office building in Kulmbach (August 1969), the main office building of the Sparkasse Ludwigsstadt (1991) and the main office building of the Sparkasse Kronach-Ludwigsstadt (November 1993). In March 2012, renovation measures for the energetic refurbishment of the main office in Kulmbach followed.
