features

The medium-sized chunky sedge grows in clumps and reaches heights of about 30 to 60 cm. The roots have a smell of turpentine . The stalks are clearly rounded at the bottom. It forms indistinctly double-folded leaves, the leaf sheaths tear open without a fiber network and the leaf nerve strips are brown in color. The ligule is very narrow and flat-arched.

The flowering period extends from May to June. The savings engined sedge forms a 2 to 3 cm long ährigen inflorescence from. The husks are dark brown in color. The approximately 4 mm large tubes are winged on the edge.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 56 or 58.

Occurrence

The sparse sedge mainly inhabits moderately dry to fresh, light forests and is often found on forest paths, forest edges and ruderal locations such as sandy, spillage places. It has its main occurrence in nutrient-rich herbaceous and perennial weed meadows.

Locations and distribution in Central Europe

The chunky sedge needs moist soils, otherwise it places hardly any restrictive conditions on its subsoil. It tolerates moderate nitrogen levels, but neither long snow cover nor very late frosts.

It settles fringes of bushes, light forest areas, ditches, litter meadows and rains with escaping slope water.

In Central Europe it occurs scattered, it hardly rises above 1200 m.
