Spedlins Tower is a tower house near the Scottish town of Templand in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Tower House was built in the 15th century. It was the seat of the Jardines of Applegarth , who built the nearby manor Jardine Hall in the 1810s . The defense tower was redesigned and extensively revised several times, including in 1578, 1605 and 1700. Probably only the masonry on the lower two floors dates from the 15th century. Spedlin's Tower was abandoned in the first quarter of the 19th century at the latest. In the 1980s, the Tower House was restored after it had previously been partially derelict.

The Tower House is about 1.5 kilometers northeast of Templand on the right bank of the Annan . The elongated Spedlins Tower has a footprint of 14 m × 11.7 m. Its quarry stone masonry is up to three meters thick. The facades are constructed symmetrically. The entrance on the east side is designed with a round arch . A coronation above a window on the first floor suggests that the original entrance was there. Corner tours protrude at the edges . The building closes with two parallel, slate-covered gable roofs .

The lower two floors have stone vaults . The staircase to the first floor is only 90 cm wide, while the spiral staircase leading from there over the following floors is of the usual dimensions. The width too small for a main staircase supports the assumption that the building was once entered via the upper floor. An emerging fireplace on the first floor is designed in the Renaissance style. It has many parallels to a fireplace in Newark Castle in Port Glasgow . A central corridor divides the upper floors.
