Markus Welzel

Markus Welzel OCist (actually Franziskus Bernhard Welzel ; born September 21, 1729 in Schönwalde , Duchy of Münsterberg , † December 1, 1792 in Heinrichau ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Heinrichau from 1778 to 1792 and in this capacity at the same time governor of the principality of Münsterberg. Since 1778 he was also abbot of Zirc in Hungary and thus a member of the Hungarian parliament .

Life

After attending school, Markus Welzel entered the Cistercian monastery Heinrichau as a novice , where he took his religious vows on February 24, 1753 . After theological studies in Weißwasser and at the Jesuit University of Breslau , he was ordained a priest on February 7, 1759. He then taught theology and was also the kitchen prefect of his monastery. In 1764 he worked as curate in Silberberg , then as provisional officer of Heinrichau and then as administrator of Schönjohnsdorf .

After the death of Heinrichau Abbot Konstantin I. Haschke in 1778 Markus Welzel was on November 10th. J. elected his successor and confirmed on June 21, 1779. On August 13, 1779, he was in personal union abbot of the monastery Zirc in Hungary. In 1780, 1782 and 1788 he stayed in Hungary as a visitor . He died on December 1, 1792 in Heinrichau; his body was buried in the monastery church.
