Lock point Niederurnen-Ziegelbrücke

Biberlichopf shelter on the foundation of the Roman tower

On the Biberlichopf above Ziegelbrücke are the remains of a Roman watchtower that was part of the security system from the time of Emperor Augustus , which was built to protect the connection between Lake Zurich  and Lake Walen . A military shelter was built over the remains of the tower during the First World War . On the mountain side there are remains of anti-tank traps from the Second World War.

The blocking point had the task of blocking the passage (passage) Walensee-Linebene / Zürichsee on both sides between Ziegelbrücke and Niederurnen.

In the area of the Canton of Glarus (left bank of the Linth Canal), an anti-tank obstacle GPH extends from the Linth Canal to the rock head below the Schlössli Oberwindegg in Niederurnen. In the area of the canton of St. Gallen (right bank of the Linth Canal) there is a short GPH on both sides of the Ziegelbrücke station: northwest between the canal and Felskopf below the Niederwindegg castle ruins and southeast in front of the Biberlikopf. The lock area includes eight shelters, seven infantry bunkers, three observers and three modern shelters.

In October 1939, construction of the bunkers along the Linth Canal began. In January 1940 the two observers were dug under the Schlössli Oberwindegg and in September the tank ditch for the GPH between Ziegelbrücke and Niederurnen. The blocking point was completed in autumn 1941. The GPH of the lock had to be created as a double obstacle to the east and west, so that a march through from both sides could be prevented. With the downstream locking point at Näfels , she had to block access to the Glarnerland. The outer shell of some of the shelters was made of ashlar masonry to save concrete. The brick wall tank wall was partially expanded as a "battlement" for riflemen.
