The Spesburg (French: Château de Spesbourg ) is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 460  m above sea level. M. on the parish of the municipality Andlau in the French department of Bas-Rhin . As a well-preserved ruin, of which the high outer walls of the residential buildings are still preserved, it is a popular destination in Alsace . Noteworthy are the Gothic windows and several large chimneys, the openings of which are still visible on the walls.

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1247. It was built under the rule of Alexander von der Dick (Dicke or Dicka) from 1246 to 1250 on the remains of a castle ruin. Like the nearby Hoh-Andlau Castle, it served to protect the Andlau Abbey . By the death of Walter of the thickness, since 1377 proconsul in Breisgau and since 1382 provincial judge in the Upper Rhine, in the costly battle of Sempach (1386) died noble family from. With the consent of the Abbess von Andlau, the nobles von Andlau took over the castle. On March 29, 1431, it was temporarily taken by Duke Stephan of Bavaria, who was then underland bailiff of Alsace. The Andlauers were able to win them back through a successful siege . In the Thirty Years War it was destroyed.
