The Spiegelberg ( Afrikaans Spieëlberg ), also Schaumberg , Spiegelkopf , Spieëlkop , is a 1231 m high, striking mountain in the Hunsberge in southern Namibia . The Spiegelberg lies east of the Konkiep and 38 km southwest of the Fish River Canyon and is clearly visible from there.
The mountain is called Spiegelberg because the Germans set up a heliograph station on the edge north of the mountain peak during the Nama uprising .
In 1942 Denis Woods made an attempt to climb the Spiegelberg. He found that the mountain could only be climbed in one group. In 1966 six climbers from the Mountain Club of South Africa started another expedition. Friedrich Schreiber had seen the mountain for the first time in 1957 and he was fascinated by the similarity the mountain had with the Matterhorn . The expedition started on April 7, 1966 from Ai-Ais on the Fish River . The expedition participants were Friedrich Schreiber, Hiltila Marggraff, Anni Scheuermann, Peter von Wrede and André Burger and Klaus von Ludwiger. The three women and von Ludwiger stayed in a camp while Friedrich Schreiber, Peter von Wrede and André Burger climbed the summit.
