The spinning mill as an administration building.

The Vorwärts spinning mill was an industrial company in what is now the Gadderbaum district of Bielefeld . It was the first German textile industrial company to work with steam power . The main building from 1851 has been preserved and is a listed building.

history

On April 11, 1850, Carl Bozi , a linen yarn dealer, bought the bleaching shop at Sandhagen 57 from master bleacher Petersmeyer in order to establish a flax and machine spinning mill on the site. His co-partners were his brothers Gustav and Theodor. Most of the capital for this venture came from the Bozi family themselves. The handspinners of the Ravensberger Land saw their sales opportunities threatened and hardly invested. However, the government of Prussia granted subsidies of six thalers per spindle with a minimum quantity of 5000 spindles. The Bozi brothers benefited from the good location on the Cologne-Minden railway and the Lutter as a source of fresh water. The factory started production in 1852. A special feature was the use of steam power. The Vorwärts spinning mill was the first industrial company in the textile industry in Germany to use this technology.

The first skilled workers were mainly Irish, with whom Carl Bozi was able to establish contacts due to his time in Belfast . Carl Bozi himself was mainly active in the commercial sector. His brother Gustav took over the technical management. The first factory was equipped with a total of 6512, in other sources 3419, spindles and its own gas plant. Both because of its size and because of its progressive production, the Vorwärts spinning mill is considered a pioneer of industrial development in Germany as a whole. The use of children as workers was also typical here. The company's success forced further investments that could not be financed easily. Therefore, the Bozi brothers converted it into a stock corporation in 1854 , which Carl and Gustav had to leave in 1869 due to pressure from the co-owners due to economic and technical difficulties. In addition to the spinning mill, a weaving mill was added in 1882, but this was closed again five years later. The competition with the Ravensberger spinning mill was particularly important from an economic point of view. The name alone reflects the tense relationship between the old elite and the new industrialist. In 1955 the spinning mill was shut down after several changes of ownership. The site and the buildings were designed by the Dr. Oetker took over.
