features

Scion links with turions

The multi-rooted pond lens is a freely floating floating leaf plant. Their shoot members are 4 to 7 (rarely 1.5 to 10) millimeters long, round to obovate and flat on both sides. The underside is mostly dark purple in color, the upper side is green to red. There are usually 8, rarely 3 to 16 roots per branch. 1 to 3 (rarely up to 5) branches are connected. It forms olive, kidney-shaped, 2 to 3 millimeter wide turions . Compared to the closely related duckweed ( Lemna sp.), The pond lens is larger, more rounded and more rooted.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.

The flowering period is believed to be from June to August. So far, no flowering plants are known from Germany or France.

The species is distributed by water birds ( hydroepizoochory ) and by water dispersal ( hydrochory ).

Occurrence

The species is distributed worldwide. The multi-rooted pond lentil is also widespread and quite common in Germany, but only scattered in West and Central Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and the mountainous region. The species inhabits shallow, eutrophic, stagnant and slowly flowing waters up to 150 centimeters deep. It is only slightly tolerant of salt. Spirodela polyrhiza is a characteristic of the Lemno-Spirodeletum association from the Lemnion minoris association . In the Allgäu, it rises in Weidensee near Remnatsried near Stötten am Auerberg in Bavaria up to 810 meters above sea level.

The species can be cultivated in the aquarium.
