The Spittl in Spittal an der Drau

The so-called Spittl on the left bank of the Lieser in Spittal an der Drau is now a location of the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences .

history

The building was built around 1530 to replace the Ortenburgers' hospice next to the parish church under Gabriel von Salamanca . In 1580 the facility was enlarged. In 1797 a fire destroyed the hospital chapel and parts of the hospital. It was not until 1843 that Josef and Konstantia Jackl restored the building. Fire damage from 1849 was repaired in 1850/1852. Subsequently, the building served as a district court, elementary school and barracks.

Building description

The south facade with its neo-classical triangular gable from 1843 was set back by 3.5 meters in 1952/1953 because the street was widened. The three-axis central risalit with four double half columns has figural stucco work in the gable dated 1843. You can see one female and two male figures with anchors and spades. These are supposed to represent the allegorical river figures Rhine , Rhone and Ticino with the symbols for mining, handicraft and trade. Due to the local conditions, it could also be the rivers Drau , Lieser and Möll . The window parapets in the central risalit are designed figuratively.

The four-wing complex encloses a two-storey arcade courtyard with Tuscan columns. The courtyard was built in the 16th century, probably using older components. The north-facing arcade wall on pillars has pointed arches. In 1998, the building was converted into a technical college according to plans by architect Herbert Missoni with extensive loft extensions, modern staircases in the inner courtyard, roofing over the large courtyard and the reopening of the courtyard arcades, which were walled up on the east, west and south sides in 1947.
