The pointed head goby ( Butis butis ) is a 15 centimeter long fish from the Butidae family . It occurs in brackish and sea water on the coast of the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa via India, the Malay Archipelago to the north coast of Australia and Fiji .

Pointed-headed gobies have an elongated body, round in cross-section and flattened on the sides only at the back, a large flattened head and a large mouth with a protruding lower jaw. The gill cover has no thorn. Depending on their origin and condition, the animals show a different color. The basic color is yellow-brown to gray-brown. There are also dark longitudinal bands, irregular transverse bands, which can also be missing, and reddish or dark brown pits. Dark bandages extend from the eye forward to the tip of the snout and backward to the gill cover. The first, hard-nosed dorsal fin is usually blackish or gray and often has red tips. The other fins are yellowish to purple, their fin rays are often reddish. The anal fin has a yellow border and often has silver points. The pectoral fins have a bright red, dark bordered spot at the base. The caudal fin is black with a light outer edge.

Way of life
The pointed goby lives in brackish and sea water in mangroves , lagoons and estuaries, usually in regions with more or less dense vegetation and on muddy ground. It avoids pure fresh water, feeds on small fish and crustaceans and is a substrate spawner .
