( Spix , 1823)

The Spix-Schwarzkopfuakari ( Cacajao ouakary ), also referred to as Ouakary in older German literature , is a species of primate from the genus Uakaris within the New World monkey (Platyrrhini). The range of the species is in northwestern Brazil and in southeastern Colombia between the rivers Rio Negro and Río Guaviare in the north and the Rio Japurá in the south.

features

The Spix black-headed uakari is very similar to the black-faced uakari ( Cacajao melanocephalus ) found north of the Rio Negro , differs from it mainly in its striking color with black head, shoulder area, arms and front back, pale yellow back in the middle and a reddish color the legs, on the tail and on the back of the back. The black-faced Uakari, on the other hand, is more homogeneously colored or two-tone blackish and brownish to deep red or yellow-brown.

Systematics

The Spix-Schwarzkopfuakari was described as Brachyurus ouakary by the Bavarian zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix in 1823 . In the late 20th century, the species was mostly recorded as a subspecies of the black-faced uakari ( Cacajao melanocephalus ) ( C. melanocephalus ouakary ). Boubli et al. (2008), however, considered this division of the Black Uakari to be unjustified. They stated that Alexander von Humboldt had described his (later lost) type specimen of the black-faced uakari with a yellowish dorsal fur and that the type locality was not known. The black-faced uakari and the uakari with the gold back described by Spix are therefore identical. The nominate form of the black-faced uakari and C. melanocephalus ouakary have been combined. In 2014 Ferrari and colleagues contradicted this view and reinstalled the animal described by Spix as a separate species under the name Cacajao ouakary .
