St-Etienne du Marin

Saint-Étienne du Marin is a sacred building consecrated to Saint Stephen , built in 1766 in the small town of Le Marin in the French overseas department of Martinique ( Antilles ) . The church building , which was created by an architect who has remained anonymous, can be assigned to the so-called Jesuit Baroque style, for which the Roman church Il Gesù serves as a model.

The church owned by the community was classified by the French Ministry of Culture on February 18, 1987 as a monument historique and placed under monument protection.

architecture

The compact facade has four Tuscan columns arranged in two pairs on each of the two floors, between which there is the round-arched portal on the ground floor and a niche with a statue of the church patron in the upper one. The upper floor, rounded at the sides, tapers upwards. The crowning glory is a triangular gable.

At a slight angle to the southern edge of this facade is a huge, freestanding bell tower with a square floor plan, the second floor of which carries the octagonal tower for the belfry.

The wooden ceiling of the nave in the form of an inverted boat keel is remarkable .

Church furniture

The choir of Saint-Étienne du Marin houses a splendid, listed high altar made of white marble with statuettes that are well worth seeing . Contrary to legend, it did not come to this church through a shipwreck off the coast of Le Marin and was not intended for the Cathedral of Lima , but rather goes back to a generous donation from a Mr. François Cornet.
