St-Ephrem (Jâlons)
Saint-Ephrem is a Romanesque Roman Catholic church dating back to the 11th century in Jâlons , a French parish in the Marne department of the Grand Est region . It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1912 .
history
The church should originally have belonged to the cathedral chapter of Châlons-sur-Marne . The oldest part is the two-aisled crypt . The existing structure was essentially built in the middle of the 12th century. After a fire, it was renovated in the middle of the 15th century. In the 19th century the church was heavily restored.
architecture
The three-aisled church has a sweeping transept. The ribbed vault of the crossing; the crossing tower is reminiscent of that of Notre-Dame-en-Vaux in Châlons. Part of the nave was renewed after the church caught fire during the Hundred Years War . During this restoration, various decorations (foliage, animals, statues) were made, the side portal on the right is particularly remarkable. The vestibule extends over the entire width of the church.
