The church Saint-Germain-et-Saint-Benoît is a Romanesque church in the town of Saint-Germain-en-Brionnais in Saône-et-Loire in the historic region of Burgundy ( France ), which was built in the 11th century. The church has been a listed monument since 1930 as a Monument Historique .

history

The church of Saint-Germain-en-Brionnais has the dual patronage of St. Germanus of Auxerre and of St. Benedict of Nursia . It was probably built in the 11th century as part of a monastery that was closed in the late Middle Ages . The convent buildings were destroyed as early as 1569 during the Huguenot Wars .

architecture

The church is a hall church , the central nave of which consists of four bays and is covered by a barrel vault. The side aisles are groin vaulted. Since there is no transept, the three semicircular apses directly adjoin the three naves .

The laterally offset bell tower in front of the west facade was built a little later than the church and has narrow, loopholed windows.

Furnishing

In the left aisle is the tomb of Sybille von Dyo and Sigy . She comes from the family who made the founding of the monastery possible through foundations. The right aisle has a Romanesque altar with a hole (débeurdinoire) on the back so that the head can be inserted. According to a local tradition, this is supposed to be a remedy against all forms of nonsense.
