history

Chapel and Place Maurice-Marchais around 1920

The first Catholic college in Vannes, which already had a chapel, was built in 1577 and taken over by the Jesuits in 1629/1630 . The chapel was restored in 1616 and rebuilt between 1661 and 1685 according to plans by the Jesuit architect Charles Turmel. The project was financed by Catherine de Francheville , who also founded an order of sisters and a rest home for women in Vannes. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on September 27, 1661 by Guillaume Bigarré. The architect Mathurin Bussionère from Nantes designed the vault of the chapel. The facade, modeled on the Italian Baroque in the Jesuit style, was completed in 1678 by the architect Jean Caillot from Vannes. The construction of the chapel dates back to a time when numerous church communities were established in the city and important religious buildings such as monasteries, rest homes and chapels were built.

The chapel has been registered as a historic monument ( Monument historique ) since January 25, 1929 .

architecture

The white stone chapel stands on a granite base . The two-story building is adorned with a high front gable on which the Jesuit monogram IHS ( Jesus Hominum Salvator ) is engraved. The simple spatial architecture of the chapel comprises only a single nave and a small choir . The patroness Catherine de Franceville had the lintel of the entrance portal inscribed with the words Fundavit eam Altissimus (“It was the Almighty who founded this chapel”). The governor of the historic Vannetais landscape , Claude de Lannion, donated three thousand livres in 1684 for the creation of a retable by the altar artist Jean Boffrand from Nantes. The central part with black marble columns and Corinthian capitals is flanked by two side wings with niches for two statues. The altarpiece in the middle is dedicated to the canonized Jesuit founder Ignatius of Loyola .
