The occasion was the daily dangers to which one saw oneself exposed during the dangerous work in the Kottenheimer Winfeld , a quarry between Kottenheim and Ettringen . They wanted to be under the special protection of St. Ask Antony . The purpose of the brotherhood was thus the promotion of the religious and moral life among its members and the protection from spiritual and physical evils through the special protection of the saint. “Johannes Hugo, Archbishop of Trier through God's mercy , St. Roman Empire Arch Chancellor , our beloved son Johannes Bartz, pastor in Kottenheim.

Particularly prominent among them is St. Anthony of Padua. The devotion to this saint and his veneration among the believing people grows and increases so much that the special veneration of St. Anthony, with the approval of the Apostolic See , formed their own brotherhoods. Statute of 1821

As a result of the social turmoil since the end of the 18th century, the brotherhood as the Society of Mühlenstein workers received a new statute on June 29, 1821. After that, one undertook to attend the funeral of deceased brothers on the feast day of St. Antonius has to pay a fee for every millstone sold, as well as an admission fee and membership fees.

Not only Kottenheimer, but also Mayener, Ettringer, St. Johanner, Ober- and Niedermendiger, Thürer and Trimbser stone workers joined the brotherhood. The Mayen mine owners made it their job to become a member of the St. Antonius Brotherhood. When the brotherhood mass was held in the parish church in Kottenheim on the Sunday after Antonius, all stone workers had to attend the mass.

Statute of 1847

On August 29, 1847, an extensive statute was issued under Pastor Franz Stephan Braun from Kottenheim, which was approved on October 5, 1847 by Trier Vicar General Matthias Martini . In the new statutes, the support of accident miners was regulated for the first time. In the event of death or serious injuries, such as a broken arm or leg, 6 thalers were paid, for minor injuries 3 thalers. On the feast day of St. Anthony were given mild gifts to the poor in the village.

With the founding of the Kottenheimer Knappschaftsverein in 1862, the brotherhood began to lose importance. Nevertheless, the Kottenheimer stuck to their St. Antonius brotherhood. In 1926 a new flag was commissioned and the members accompanied a deceased brother at the funeral until the 1970s. Today the brotherhood no longer exists. The flag from 1926 was extensively restored for the 1000th anniversary of the local community in 2008 and has been hanging in the parish church of St. Nikolaus in Kottenheim ever since .
