The Evangelical Lutheran St. Johannis Church is a church in Uslar in Lower Saxony . The church is located west of the old town and south of Graftplatz.

history

The church is originally built in the late 13th century. When exactly the church was built can no longer be determined. The west tower of this church still stands. This makes it one of the oldest churches in the southern Solling area . The current church was built between 1837 and 1845 based on a design by GLF Laves . The west tower remained standing in this building and parts of the choir were used in this building. Reddish sandstone from the Solling was used in the construction. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist .

The church

The tower, which is also where the main portal is located, dates from the 13th century. He wears a pointed, octagonal helmet, this is covered with slate .

At the end of the 18th century, the nave was in poor condition. GLF Laves , the son of the Uslar pastor Ernst Friedrich Laves, drew up the plans for an actual renovation. In 1836 Laves was commissioned with the renovation, after changes the renovation began in 1841. The consecration of the church took place on May 25, 1845. A new nave was built between the choir and the tower.

The choir was built from May 20, 1428. The builder was probably Otto II (the one-eyed) . The church had become too small, so that the Uslarers enlarged the church by adding the choir. The choir was then completed in 1470.

The interior of the church

The winged altar on a Gothic refectory is striking . In the shrine there is a calvary, this is surrounded by four saints. These are John the Baptist , Apostle John , Saint Augustine and Saint Lawrence . Further out there are four scenes from the life of Christ, the Adoration of the Magi , The Last Supper , the Lamentation and Christ in Limbo . In the left inner wing there are six scenes, these are the Annunciation of the Lord , the birth of Christ , the offering of Christ in the temple , the crowning of thorns , Christ before Pilate and the carrying of the cross . In the right inner wing there are the following scenes: Christ's prayer on the Mount of Olives, Christ's arrest, the flagellation of Christ, the resurrection, the ascension of Christ and Christ as judge of the world. On the left side of the wing are the scenes Visitation, Meeting of Mary with Elizabeth, the Baptism of Christ, the Beheading of John the Baptist and the Bringing of the Head of John the Baptist. On the right outside are the scenes of Laurentius distributing the church property to the poor, St. Laurentius baptizing Lucilius, the flagellation of St. Laurentius and the torture of St. Lawrence on the grate. The portrayal of St. Laurence comes from Hans von Geismar . In the predella is Mary and to the right and left the apostles.

The font was created according to a design by Laves from 1844. On one foot there is a shaft that is grooved 16 times. The basin above the shaft shows 16 hexagons. The pulpit was also made to a design by Laves. The four evangelists were originally located in the fields around the basket, the figures were lost when the pulpit was moved between 1959 and 1962. On the left side of the altar is a wall tabernacle from 1430. Under the tabernacle there is a kneeling figure. In the tympanum there is a coronation of Mary, above there are angels. Laves also designed the organ prospectus. The organ was built by Konrad Euler from Wahmbeck. The organ was inaugurated on May 25, 1845.

Today's bells have been in the church since June 8, 1975. They are bronze bells from the Karlsruhe bell and art foundry . On the large bell there is the inscription "Bewahre Frieden", on the middle bell "Stifte Community" and on the small bell "Wake up faith".

Behind the altar is the tomb of the first preacher of St. John's Church, Jost Bauerfeindt, who died in 1594. The inscription reads: "Anno 1594, October 17th / the venerable and well-tempered Er Jost Bauwerfeindt fell asleep in the Lord, to whom God be merciful / has served the church in Uslar 45 years in the preaching rambling".

The organ

The organ was built in 1845 by the organ builder Balthasar Conrad Euler. The slider chest instrument has 26 stops on two manuals and pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
