The St. Johannis School is a Catholic private school in Bremen . It was founded in 1819 as a Catholic elementary school . The school has an old grammar school section, which has also led to the Abitur since 2006 . With the restructuring of the Hauptschule and Realschule into a performance- differentiated integrated Hauptschule and Realschule , this area became the first comprehensive school in Bremen in 1969 . The school buildings used today are located in the Schnoorviertel in the center of the city of Bremen, around the St. Johann church .

history

The St. Johannis School opened on November 2, 1819, as one of the first Catholic institutions since the Reformation . Four years later the nearby St. Johann Church was consecrated.

The school was closed between 1938 and 1950.

The secondary level was spun off in 1969 and since then, like a comprehensive school, has led to different school qualifications after the ninth / tenth grade. In 1971 the primary school was expanded to include a branch in Huchting (St. Pius), and in 1986 a branch in Osterholz (St. Antonius). In February 2006, the upper secondary level opened, which is located in another building, the old post office, which has been renovated and modernized. The new music and science rooms are also located here.

The school

The primary and secondary schools are independent schools. The schools are run by the Catholic Community Association in Bremen. The schools are recognized by the state; their degrees correspond to those of state schools.

As a Catholic school, the St. John's School organizes class and school services. Prayer and meditation have their place in everyday school life. The tenth grades of the school take part in “days of reflection” in the Benedictine monastery in Nütschau . Unlike at other schools in the state of Bremen (see Bremen clause ), religious education is a regular subject. The school describes religious education as “open and tolerant towards those who think differently”.

The school organizes a Burkina Faso week every year . The income generated should enable people in Africa to help themselves . A teacher continuously leads the one world working group , which among other things sells fair trade goods in a specially designed room in the school. The working group is one of three so-called one-world shops in Bremen.

School partnerships exist with a school in Périgueux ( France ) and the Dallastown Area High School in York ( Pennsylvania ).
It is a partner school of Werder Bremen .

primary school

The primary school is housed in a former shipping company building on the Tiefer road near the banks of the Weser . At the main location, the school has two rooms, plus the two single-room branch offices. The total of 16 classes have an average frequency of 26.4 students. The school employs 20 teachers , including 18 women, a vice-principal and a principal .
The Reliable Primary School has been set up at the primary school since the 2000/2001 school year .

Secondary level I.

The lower secondary level of the St. Johannis School comprises grades 5 to 10. It has six classes; Since 2007, four of these class trains have been in the integrated secondary and secondary schools , two class trains in the grammar school department.

Secondary level I is housed in the building of the former Landherrnamt on Dechanatstrasse. The building was built in the Romantic style until 1857 according to plans by the architect and building director Alexander Schröder and it is a listed building in Bremen .

Secondary level II

Since the 2006/2007 school year there has been an upper secondary school . The students of the grammar school are offered a two-year preparation for the central high school diploma, during which a one-year build-up year after the tenth grade is compulsory for students of the integrated Hauptschule and Realschule. This measure is therefore necessary in order to achieve the required number of hours, which is distributed over the years in grammar school classes 5–10. The first class passed the Abitur exams in spring 2008 and received the Abitur in mid-2008.

Since the number of pupils is small, there are only three profiles in which the options are smaller than at other upper secondary levels . Religion is set as a compulsory subject in addition to the other Abitur-relevant subjects. An advanced course is stipulated in each profile ( biology , mathematics or German ), the additional advanced course ( geography , physics or English ) can be selected across all profiles.
