The St. Kliment Ohridski Station ( Bulgarian база Св. Климент Охридски basa Sw. Kliment Ochridski ) is a Bulgarian research station on Livingston Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands in the Antarctic . It is located on Bulgarian Beach in Emona Anchorage at a distance of only 1.7 km from the Spanish Juan Carlos I station .

history

The station is operated by the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute of Sofia University in the Antarctic summer. Originally it consisted of two shelters built between April 26 and 29, 1988 by a four-man crew with the support of the Russian supply ship Michail Somow . Actually, Cape Vostok at the northwestern end of Alexander I Island west of the Antarctic Peninsula was intended for their construction , but this could not be achieved due to the prevailing ice conditions. The station was expanded between 1993 and 1994 and was officially inaugurated on December 11, 1993. It is named after the Bulgarian bishop and scholar Kliment von Ohrid (≈840–916). The main building has a usable area of 80 m² and consists of two bedrooms, a bathroom, a laboratory and a dining room with a kitchenette. Two more buildings were added between 2007 and 2010. This ensures the capacity for an occupation of 25 people for geological, biological, glaciological, topographical and geographical research work. Personnel and material are transported by ship from Ushuaia and Punta Arenas . Since 2012, the Saints heard Ivan Rilski consecrated chapel to the station.
