The St. Knud Church is a former Roman Catholic church in Friedrichstadt , Schleswig-Holstein . The previous building housed the first Catholic community in Schleswig-Holstein after the Reformation . Patron is St. Knud , King of Denmark from 1080 to 1086. The neo-Gothic yellow brick building without a tower was profaned on October 31, 2003 and is one of the branch churches of the parish of St. Knud in Husum.

history

The Catholic community in Friedrichstadt was the first Catholic community in Schleswig-Holstein after the Reformation was introduced. She moved several times within the village. After the Jesuits came to the city in 1646, services were held in the so-called five - gable house on the same street. Even after the Jesuits ended caring for the congregation in 1793 and this task was passed on to non-religious priests, the congregation still did not have its own church. At that time, the municipality stretched from Glückstadt in the south to Fredericia in the north.

In 1840 the parish bought a piece of land from the Friedrichstädter Schiffergilde through the pastor Heiremanns at the time. The Copenhagen architect Friedrich Hetsch built a church on this in 1846, but the Friedrichstadters demolished it again in 1849 due to construction defects: the ceiling of the building had collapsed. Another new church followed in 1854, this time based on designs by Eggermann from Flensburg.

Although the Catholic mother church of the west coast, it lost more and more importance compared to the Christ the King Church in nearby Husum , so that the parish has been located in Husum since 1935 and this church has also been the main church of the community since then. This and the costs of maintaining the church's necessary finances led the church council to plan a closure. These plans were received critical not only of the Friedrichstädter community members in open letters to talk, among other things, the honorary citizen of the city of Frederick city, woman Laman-Trip, the Friedrichstädter SPD parliamentary group spokesman Rohmann, Mr. Bishop. Schmidt and reigning at that time pastor of the Old Catholic Church on North Beach against closure. The protest was useless. "At the request and with the consent of the parish of Christ the King of Husum, the dissolution of the St. Knud branch church in Friedrichstadt will be ordered with effect from October 31, 2003". This decision is later described by the Hamburg Auxiliary Bishop Jaschke as "unhappy and bad".

In the church on Fürstenburgwall, after the profanation, a liturgical service took place only once a month, the Friedrichstadt Catholics met from now on in the parish hall of the Lutheran St. Christophorus Church in town. Since 2007, however, Holy Mass has been celebrated again in the de-dedicated church . Today the church belongs to the parish of St. Knud in Husum and weekly services are held there again.

architecture

The church stands on the edge of Friedrichstadt's inner city on one of the canals , the Fürstenburggraben. The rather inconspicuous church has a length of 22 meters, a width of 11.4 meters and a height of 13.6 meters. Today you can still see the Christ body from 1230 and the pews from 1760, which previously stood in a Catholic chapel, in the nave . The Corpus Christi on the altar cross was created around 1230 and is said to have been rescued from the sea as flotsam . It is said to come from one of the 19 churches in Nordstrander , which perished at the Second Grote Mandränke in 1634 , but there are legends of this kind about many ecclesiastical objects in Schleswig-Holstein. The corpus certainly belonged to a church in Uelvesbüll until around 1855 , which was demolished in 1853. The six wooden apostle figures from the 17th century represent Ansgar , Bonifatius , Johannes , Joseph , Knut and Petrus . After the profanation by the board of trustees mentioned below, they were given to the Marienkirche (Husum) as a permanent loan and replaced by photographs, but have since been replaced returned to their origins. The altar relics that had previously been in the church were brought to Husum as ordered by the Archbishop of Hamburg.

Unlike other deconsecrated church buildings that wants Archdiocese of Hamburg , the listed obtain Church because of its historical importance in any case. On December 5, 2005, a board of trustees appointed by the bishop decided to commission the artist Otmar Alt with a complete redesign of the church. Alt agreed. This resolution was not approved by the Friedrichstadt parishioners either. The project ultimately failed, among other things, because the renovation and artistic design required a high six-figure sum. The church was renovated in 2018/19.
