St. Mary's Church (Herrensohr)
The Catholic parish church of St. Marien , also known as the church of St. Maria or Siebenmerz Mariä, is located on Karlstrasse on the western edge of Saarbrücken - Herrensohr .
history
The history of the parish goes back to 1901, when the Herrensohr colony, founded in 1856, became aware of the need to offer its Catholic fellow citizens local worship. Until then, the place was attached to the parish of St. Marien in Dudweiler . The colony Jägersfreude was connected . In the spring of 1901, on the initiative of the Episcopal Vicariate General in Trier, a brick building with woodwork was built, which initially served as an emergency church from December of that year . From 1908 Herrensohr was elevated to a chapel parish with its own property management, after a parsonage had been built as the official residence of the local pastor in 1906. In 1930 there were 4,500 souls and it soon became apparent that the initial emergency church was no longer sufficient. Funding was made available, and after almost three years of construction, the new building was consecrated as a place of worship in 1938. The design and construction came from the Mainz architects Ludwig Becker and Anton Falkowski . Already in July 1944 the house was almost completely destroyed after a bomb attack and was not consecrated again until 1951 , only various renovations were carried out in the meantime in order to preserve the remaining building fabric. At the present time, the parish of St. Marien Herrensohr still has around 1,500 Catholics. The second church building is the Protestant Kreuzkirche in Johannesstrasse.
Since 1 January 2012 by a merger of the five municipalities of St. Barbara created a large village of about 11,000 faithful, St. Boniface and St. Mary's in Dudweiler and St. Hubertus in Jägersfreude with St. Mary in Herrensohr.
Renovation works
The building has recently undergone major renovations. In 1981 the restoration of the tower room and the conversion and installation of toilets began. In 1987, extensive restoration work began on the outside and inside, which included the restoration of damage caused by mining from 1989 to 1991. At the same time, the wooden coffered ceiling was rebuilt and the font was moved. In 1998 work was also carried out on 14 leaded glass windows that had been destroyed by vandalism . In 2005, the chapel was converted into a weekday church.
organ
In the church of St. Marien there is an organ from the company Gebrüder Späth from Mengen- Ennetach, which was installed in 1951 with the renovation. The two-manual instrument has 20 registers for the main unit (10), a swell unit (6) and pedal (4), which can be coupled to one another. There are some unused register switches on the free-standing console , which indicate a previously planned second expansion stage of the organ. The organ is certified in good condition as it was overhauled after 2000. The disposition is as follows:
