St. Petrus Church (Quakenbrück)

St. Peter

The Protestant Church of St. Petrus , consecrated in 1966, was built not far from the air base and the military facilities of the Second World War in what was later to be called Quakenbrücker Neustadt, a district called “Merschland” .

The two-part building, designed according to contemporary criteria, consists of a nave and a free-standing bell tower in the manner of a campanile . The walls are almost completely clad inside and outside with hand-painted Dutch clinker bricks. 132 colored panes by the Bremen glass painter Heinz Lilienthal are set in honeycomb concrete . Lilienthal also made five colorful side windows, each depicting two scenes from the passion story of Jesus Christ, each with a symbol.

The interior is dominated by a bulky altar , which takes on Carolingian altar shapes. The crucifix , baptismal font , lectern, three-armed chandelier and the door of the main portal are bronze works by the Nuremberg artist Heinz Heiber . The 3.15 large 2.20 meter tapestry on the pulpit side comes from the workshop of hand weaving Huhs in Ganderkesee and makes the catch of Peter . The the apse decorative, consisting of 132 colored discs window wall and the five side windows created the Bremer Glass painter Heinz Lilienthal .

The building, conceived according to the contemporary aspects of the 1960s, differs significantly from the sacred buildings of past centuries. A lot of daylight falls into the interior of the church, which, together with the interior design, such as the large, colorful window wall in the round niche behind the altar area, the apse , is intended to encourage concentration on what is happening in the altar area. The far-forward altar enables participation in the altar event in the original sense. The altar area itself conveys traditional church architecture in the form of the massive, square altar, which stands on a circular pedestal and takes up an old, Carolingian altar shape. Behind it you can see a bronze cross with a stylized body of the suffering Christ, whose shadows are visible on the ceiling.
