Church before being converted into a school building

The Sankt-Stephanus-Kirche is a listed building in the district of Stadt Gernrode, part of the city of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt . Only the steeple is preserved from the original church. After the church was converted into a school, it is now planned to convert it into a residential building for age-appropriate living.

location

The building is located in the southern part of Gernröder's old town on the north side of the school square at Schulplatz 4 and is entered in the local monument register.

Architecture and history

The church may have been founded in the time of the Ottonians . There is also speculation that construction began in 1064. It is mentioned as a market church in 1207. The market community was ecclesiastically independent and formed its own parish with a pastor and two heads. In 1346 there is another documentary mention as a parochial church. The church was enlarged until 1400. In 1470 it was restored. In 1533 the parishes of the Stephanuskirche and the monastery were merged. The St. Stephen's Church was now only used every three months for a festive service. It was also used as a burial chapel. The graves of the von Schlotheim family were located in the church. There was a family crypt of the Mohs family. Chief forester Kersten was buried in the vault . In 1746 Bergrat Müller was buried in the church.

Only the late Romanesque church tower remains from the early days of the church . It was built from rubble stones on a transverse rectangular floor plan and has domed acoustic arcades , which were built in 1580. At this point, the tower was repaired. This is where the curved hood with its octagonal lantern was created . There are several bells in the tower. The Fridericus bell with a circumference of 63.5 cm was given by the collegiate church to the St. Stephen's Church in 1270. The inscription on the bell is in mirror writing. Another renovation of the tower took place in 1613.

The Protestant residents of Gernrode, who were Protestant after the introduction of the Reformation, used the Stephanikirche until 1631 , as the monastery was under Catholic influence. The structural condition of St. Stephen's Church was described as poor. It even lacked the pews . In 1633 the pastor Johannes Graupner was murdered on the altar table of the church by Catholic imperial soldiers. From 1710 the church was only used for prayer services at burials. The church tower was renovated in 1754. This year can be found in the weather vane on the tower . In 1780, in addition to the funeral services, there was again a quarterly use. In 1790 one of the bells broke when the storm tolled , and it was cast over with another in 1792. It bears the name Schimmel and has the inscription Thanks to the benevolent support of the citizens, I was poured over. provided and was hung up again in the Stephanikirchtower.

In 1809 the roof of the church was re-covered with slate. The beams and windows were also renewed. The church registers were kept until 1830, and services were held until 1846.

In 1847 the nave was converted into a school building in the classicism style. A ceiling was drawn into the central nave. The original window openings can still be seen in their old form. Part of the former cemetery has been converted into a schoolyard. The church tower remained the property of the parish. The grave digger's tools were stored in the crypt until 1927 . On the east gable is an inscription stone with the date 1582 and the inscription O Christe, never leave your holy temple, nor do you miss the last lines of prophets who proclaim your name. In 1866 the tower buttons were re-gilded and coins and documents were inserted there. In 1910, the onion dome of the tower was converted into a baroque shape.

In 1988 the tower was repaired. The weather vane and the ball were also refurbished; in addition to the materials in the ball, four GDR coins and a certificate were also placed in it.

Since June 11, 2007, after the stairs have been repaired, it has been possible to climb the Stephaniturm again on the initiative of the “Andreas Popperodt Cultural Association”. On October 25, 2010, school operations in the building ceased. The primary school located there moved to the newly built school center on the Hagenberg. For house 4, as well as for the neighboring buildings, the establishment of age-appropriate apartments was planned.
