history
Since there was initially no building site available for a church in the slaughterhouse district, which was newly built towards the end of the 19th century and was rapidly increasing in population, a no longer used dance hall at Adlzreiterstraße 22 was converted for church purposes in the 1920s. It was consecrated on November 25, 1923 and gradually converted from an originally provisional branch church of the parish of St. Peter to the parish church of St. Andrew . In July 1944, this church, including the kindergarten and nurses ' home, was destroyed in a US bomb attack. The kindergarten and nurses' home were able to be rebuilt after the end of the war, but the ruins of the church were only temporarily prepared as an emergency church.
In 1950 it was possible to acquire four ruined sites in Zenettistrasse as building sites for a new church. The design by the Munich architect Ernst Maria Lang emerged as the winning design from an architecture competition organized by the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . In November 1952, the earthworks began on April 12, 1953, groundbreaking ceremony , on August 18, topping and on 29 November 1953, the new St. Andrew's Church as one of the first new church buildings in the city of Munich after the Second World War by Cardinal Joseph Wendel to be consecrated . As in the earlier parish of St. Andreas, the city pastor was Prelate Emil Muhler .
The general renovation of the interior of St. Andrew's Church took place in two construction phases in 2009 and 2010. First of all, the heating system and the electrical installation were adapted to the current requirements. Afterwards, after removing the old layers of paint, the walls and ceilings were given their original lime paint. Overall, there was a return to the original architecture.
architecture
The church building in the typical simple objectivity of the early fifties is plastered white, the facade is adorned with a simple, large wooden cross. To the west, the low-rise sacristy connects to the two-story parsonage behind at a right angle. On the right side of the church is the free-standing 32 meter high tower flush with the street front.
The interior of the church is also in the simplicity of the materials that is typical of the times, the beamed ceiling gives the hall the grace of a Romanesque basilica, everything concentrates the view of the oversized crucifix made of linden wood in the chancel. It was created by Georg Johann Lang (1889–1968) from Oberammergau , the architect's father.

In the tower there is a sonorous ringing made of five cast steel bells from the Bochum Association from 1953. The bells are named Dreifaltigkeit (c 1 ), Andreas (es 1 ), Maria (f 1 ), Joseph (g 1 ) and Michael (b 1 ). In addition to a German and Latin inscription, each instrument also bears a thread relief, which together express the respective dedication of the bell; an ornament rarely found for steel bells of that time. The total weight of the peal is around 4,550 kilograms. The full bell only sounds on high feasts.
